Ferrets usually cost about $120-$150 if you purchase them from a pet store but if you are looking into getting a ferret from a breader they will be above $150 usually. Shelter's prices are a little more reasonable due to the fact that there are so many but this reductinon is price does not mean that you lose out on how much fun, love, and friendlyness you are getting. I would chose to get a ferret from a breeder because they have had the ferrets since they were babies and know more about their history including their vet history. This can be helpful later if you ever need to diagnose a problem later. I am not discouraging you to not look at ferrets from pet stores or shelters because the people that work there know most of what you need to know about your fuzzy little friend that is now the newest member of your family. The information on this website will give you pritty much all of the information that the pet store/shelter does not give you when you go to get your little buddy. Hope all goes well with your furry friend!

I really like this website! It's one of the first websites on ferrets that has helped me. I have a little boy fuzzball, Eli. He's the cutest thing! Only 7 months old, but I love him to death! Playing with him is so much fun, and I know that he looks forward to it too (since he gets to run around outside of his cage). Lotsa good info on this site. I just recently (last week and I miss him greatly) lost my oldest boy Bubba who was 4-1/2 during an adrenal surgery and his oldest sister Tasha passed away from adrenal complications in August. Kiki and Moose are the remaining siblings and I think they would like a new playmate or two... All four of my fuzzies came from a pet store, and this time I will try a breeder.

I have a 10 month old male and a 3 Month old female. I also had a 12 Month old Female but someone stole her. I miss her very much. I would have to say they are the best pet I've had. Thanks!!

I absolutely love animals!!! Especially dogs and ferrets. I want a ferret so bad! I asked my parents thorough email and they haven't sent it back yet so, I think they are thinking about it. But I Have to keep it in my room. I have a dog, a Jack Russel terrier and I don't think he and a ferret would work. So I will have to find time for both. I think I can manage! :)

I am now just starting to enjoy my 5th ferret. I got my first one in 1982 & have had one off & on for several years. Although the names list says it's a male name, I named her Sydney. (Should at least be an "either" name LOL} If any of you out there haven't seen it, check out a show about ferrets on PBS. It shows what we all already know about what great pets they really are & highlights competitions, info & care.

Hello! Well I just found a baby ferret today in our basement/laundry room! Little kit came from god knows where but he is safe and happily a new addition to our family!

I just bought a really sweet female ferret. She is 4 months old, but so tiny and timid and sweet. Her name is Bella and she's my little angel. I LOVE HER!

Hey just thought I would leave a comment. I'm 18 and I have had 6 ferrets so far. I always wanted them as a kid so I just had to have some. My first ferret was a massive polecat hob but he was light colored. Then we got an albino hob and a silver hob, both were stunners. After that I was given a small dark polecat jill. She was very nippy and nervous at first but soon tamed down. Just recently I have brought two new ones, a brother and sister who are also polecat colored. I named them Echo and Devlin. They are very sweet. The hob has been a little ill recently, but I'm trying to nurse him at home first before spending lots of cash at the vets. A lot of people don't know what to feed ferrets and I still hear people telling me shocking stories about what they feed their ferrets. IN MY OPINION THE BEST DIET FOR FERRETS IS WHAT I FEED MY OWN which consists of fresh raw lamb cutlets, rabbit, pheasant, quail, wood pidgeon, chicks, marrow bones then a small amount of good quality canned kitten or cat food and some dry ferret feed. Occasionally I give mine a raw egg. Anyway I love ferrets and have done my best to learn about them, but there's still a lot to learn. Just thought I would leave this comment to share my love for these wonderful animals which in my opinion make better pets than the average furry pets like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters. Also to my ferrets Tyler, Nipper, Sterling, Tara, Echo and Devlin... hold tight guys love you all. You've given me a lot to do and broke the boredom but along the way you've cost me large quantities of money and trashed my flat... bless em.

Hello! I wish I had found this site along time ago, I found it very helpful. I have had a total of 3 ferrets since I was a little kid (I'm 24 now), and I just rescued a female ferret from a very sad life. I first had Franny (girl), Elvis (boy), Bandit (boy) and now I have Trixey (girl). They have all been sable ferrets and they were all rescue pets. Sadly I seem to get them around 3 years of age and they usually have not been properly cared for by the time I get them, and they have all died now. I just got Trixie about 2 weeks ago. She's about 3 years old but she seems to be in wonderful shape and she is so good with my little girl. They bring each other a lot of joy and it's fun to watch them play in the ball pit that we have. My boyfriend and I bought a ferret last month and he is the best pet I've ever had. I didn't know how much I would love this little guy. His name is Bandit and he's so much fun to have around and play with. He always makes us laugh! He's a Marshall Ferret and though he is mischievous at times he is always funny as heck!

Our family just got a young white ferret named Ghost from the Animal Shelter. We love him already. He is so cute, funny and into everything. It is sad when he has to go back into his cage. He loves the soft sweatshirts in his cage to crawl thru, hide and sleep.

My ferret Nemo died 02/23/09 of lymphoma. I miss him.

:( My ferret max died day before yesterday!! I miss him dearly.. He was so sweet..! He acted somewhat like a dog to me!! He was very unique.. He whimpered when I gave him baths and his spot was on my shoulder.. and he'd lick me in my cheek!! and when he played, he'd bounce on all fours and make a noise similar to a squeaky toy every time he hit the floor...

Hi, I really like you website. I have been reading much about all the info you give us. Here in Spain ferrets have existed for centuries but always for hunting. Ferret-pet owners are working a lot to make people understand that ferret is also a pet and not a working animal. We are also helping ferret owners in our neighborhood Portugal to legalization as they are prohibited there and they can not even go for a walk.

I have a Marshall ferret named Wilza. She's so cute and loves watermelon and hates meat. She lives with me in my room. My room is pink and her bed is brown with a sleeping bag that says angel.

I'm getting ferrets this February! I can't wait as ferrets have been the love of my life for the past few years. I have had my ferret Rascal for about 2 years now, and just got Reckless who is 7 months old. And the joy and laughter and unconditional love that these two bring my husband and myself is unmeasurable. After a hard day at work, to let them out, and watch them bounce around (like kangaroos), play, make noises it is just the highlight of our day.

My 3 1/2 yr ferret PJ, he's a sweety and I would not part with him for anything .... but I'm not impressed with the breeder, as he was not socialized at all. Just discovered your site - recommended by a friend. I have 3 ferrets, Fidget, Bridget & Midget and they live in an outdoor ferret court with all mod cons.

Looking for any info for my ferret (Fezzy). He had the left adrenal removed last year and now the right side is bad. I cannot seem to find a vet to operate on the right. I am aware of the risks but I am a surgical nurse and I see many difficult procedures done everyday. Is it just the vet that lacks confidence?? Fezzy is on Lupron and Melatonin but I want to find a vet to do surgery as the meds only mask symptoms.any help is appreciated. Thanks Drew

I have some comments for Lynn from TX with the female ferret showing adrenal disease. Are you far from a larger city that may have vets who could perform the surgery less expensively? You could also try a local humane society or rescue organization and maybe they would have lists of vets who treat ferrets, and you could see if one of them would do the surgery less expensive. The vet who is a personal friend sounds like he has the confidence in himself to do it, as a personal friend, you could trust that he'd do his best for her. Good luck to you and I hope you find a way to cure your little girl.

We have two rescue ferrets. Just had adrenal surgery on the male a few months ago (a total success). Now, however, the female is showing signs of the disease. The surgery was very costly, apx $1,300 which included the testing done in TN. There is only one vet in our town that does this surgery and he will only do it after testing. There is another vet here that has not done the surgery, but has offered to do it at a fraction of the cost and without testing. He does my ferret's annual checkups and shots and has performed several surgeries on my dogs in the past and he is a personal friend. I was too afraid to have a less experienced vet do the surgery on my male. I adore both ferrets and desperately want to get surgery for our female, but am still in debt to the vet for the first one, which I make monthly payments on. Should I take a chance with a less (ferret) experienced vet, or bite the bullet and charge another grand on the card? This particular vet does have a great deal of experience performing surgery on birds. Any suggestions?

I enjoy reading these messages in the Guest Book, and I also see it as a forum for giving each other tips. The one thing I have learned is that ferrets need a lot of attention. So unless you able to spend a lot of time with them, you should get at least 2 so they'll have companionship. I just love these little fuzz-butts!

I just got my first ferret today. Her coat is like a raccoons (like most ferrets)and she looooves to play. Balloons and this green ball I have are her favorite toys. I'm going to the pet store tomorrow to get treats, toys, and a leash. Ferrets are awesome pets and need lots of love everyday. They make wonderful pets but they also take a lot of responsibility to care for one(even more with two or more ferrets). But the hours of fun really do make up for the smelly cages and baths.

Editor's Note: It's important to be careful with balloon's since pieces from a popped balloon could cause a life threatening blockage. Because of this, toys for ferrets should never be constructed with latex, rubber, foam rubber, or Styrofoam.

I believe Ferrets make wonderful pets, and would suggest that anyone looking for the perfect pet, and can meet the need of a Ferret should share my experience of having one, or two.

My mom made me give my ferret away, then she got me a puppy. I was so upset. She tried to make me forget my ferret. I want to get my ferret back but I don't want the people I gave her 2 to be upset because they probably love her as much as I do.

This site has helped me with my first ferret. I named her Tinkerbell. I got her because the previous owner had kept her and another ferret outside in a rabbit cage. The other one happened to die and this one was about to have a heat stroke! We rescued her about a week ago.

This is the best website I have found to help me with my first ferret. I named her Shiolo. She is a blast to have around and loves to play when running loose. Was thinking of getting another one for a playmate but not sure as of yet. For Shiolo can be a hand full at times.

I have 4 wonderful ferrets in our home. They have the run of the upstairs during the day and at night we put them in their condo. They train really well on news paper which we put on the floor in the corner areas. I think they are the best.

Your site is the only one that I actually found the suggestions on bringing a new ferret into the home, I have to say it was definitely very helpful. I bought my first ferret Sassy in February07 and she was alone for a month and a half then on St Patty's Day 07 I went and bought a male Jinx. Both Sable and both very friendly However my female has more spunk than the male I did introduce them and Sassy did drag him around and kind of tend to be a little rough with him when we saw her get a little to rough we moved him out of the picture and then he would cry as if looking for her. Sassy and Jinx seem to be doing very well for only being around one another for 2 days but they are only one month apart in age. So thank you for having my questions answered in you column.

Message: We got our first ferret a month ago. He is AWESOME! Like a kitten on caffeine! Best pet we have ever had (and we have a houseful of pets). His name is Cyrano and he is approximately 8 months old. The people we got him from were afraid of him and only touched him with gloves and kept him caged a lot. He is our first ferret but we love animals and knew he needed to be socialized. We can now cuddle him with only nibbles and not bites.

This site has been very helpful for all our questions! We are first time ferret owners. Our Ferrets are 8 weeks old, named Roxy and Sid. They have been a great addition to our home. We are still struggling a bit with the nipping, but are trying to stay consistent with it.

We just bought our first ferrets a couple of weeks ago and just love them to death. :-) They are around 16 weeks old and both sable, Sweet Pea and Sugar Pie. I love the site. The ferret name on here is great. I like to see all the different names people use. Thanks for a great site. :-)

Hi, I really liked that I found the information needed about ferret's having dry skin. Thanx a lot. I have two little ones named Mikey (7 months) and Mickey (6 months) they are AWESOME!!!... but remember that even though they are very cute and playful, you must always supervise them and keep their cage clean with fresh food and water daily. If you really love them then this shouldn't be a problem.

When I typed Ferrets MN, I expected to get a list of ferret shelters and clubs in my area. (not what I was looking for) I guess you came up because the states of the ferrets used in the light-sensitivity experiment were listed. I can't tell you enough how well the experiment was done as well as conveyed. I appreciate that you referred to the ferrets involved as pets. It reassures me that you can "experiment" with your pets to further explore their ever-changing needs. I try to make life as enriched as possible for my beloved pets also. I "experiment" with different stimuli: e.g. tubes and chewbes, carpet and fabrics, marble slabs to cool down and fuzzy fleece to warm up, etc. But in all I do I lack the wherewithall to pass along my findings with the clarity you posessed in your study. So many articles are just fluff and others are so scientific, many are passed over by me. You kept it simple yet your caring for ferrets came right through. I hope to see more articles in the future. (P.S. Due to having read this article I plan to put a dark box together for my ferrets to which they will have constant access. I always knew they needed a place to get out of light I just never knew how imperitive it was.)

Also put like a supply list or people to know what to buy (for first time owners)!! Put tips on how-to's...for example "How to potty train your ferret..." like that!!! Ferrets are very addictive little critters. I started with Pandora - a sweet little girl. Then I added Jazz so Pandora would not be lonely but Jazz is wild and she's calm so I added Whisper. She's just like her name gentle and sweet. They are all great and so entertaining!!!

Just thought I'd post. This is the best ferret website I've seen yet! And I've been looking at fuzzy websites for about 4 years now. We have 2, Rufus and Charlee Anne. Our first was Weasel-he went to the rainbow bridge after we'd had him for only a few months. We adopted him from a family member, and he was almost 8 when we got him! One day, he stopped walking, wouldn't even come out of his cage, and then stopped using his litter box. We actually had to put him to sleep because his quality of life would never have improved (his kidney was hugely enlarged and pressing on his spine). It was honestly the saddest day of my life. :-( We're happy now with our 2 though. We had to get Charlie because Rufus came from a home that had lots of pets, and he was lonely. He sure was happy to get a sister!

I have 3 ferrets, Jumba 1yr. 2 mnths, Stitch, 7 mnths, and Bandit 6 weeks. They are the best pets you could ever have.

It's not hard to take care of them and they get very very attached to you just like a dog. When ever I get home from work, they run around until I got to bed (that's about 6 hours a day.) They are the best.

My son and I was given a wonderful little bundle of fun. The person was not a ferret person, well I end up with the unwanted animals. I was so surprised and this little ones play time and I am so in love with him or her don't know. I wanted to say out of all the web sites on ferrets, I find your the most helpful. Thank you for all the information we found it so helpful and plan on using it often.

I love your website, there is lots of info on my favorite topic... Ferrets of course! I only have one ferret. I only want one perfect ferret. Her name is Lilo Ohana M. I am right now training her to do neat tricks. I taught her to roll over (very hard), obstacle courses, and much more. She seems very happy to live with me as her mommy. My mom absolutely loves her, which is weird because she isn't a rodent person. Her cage is sooo big, she has many toys, and I just got her a play pen at NJ Pets. She loves it!!!! My 2 other cats also get along with her fairly well! I know I spoil my ferret, but I think she deserves it!!! Don't You?
